Pleasure products are rarely thought of, or used, for anything other than what their title implies—pleasure. But this October, these items were discovered to hold another utilization that turned out to be just as successful as their primary pleasuring function: as a weapon. Intending on robbery, a man stormed into the Albion adult store in Brisbane, Australia. Armed with a knife, he threatened the on-duty employee, demanding money.
Sex toys and Chinese blow-up dolls, oh my!
Although China may be ahead of the game in most other industrial aspects, they have been lagging behind in one particular market: sex toys, or at least openly admitting the demand for them. However, Chris Wu, a native of Beijing, has realized the opportunity to capitalize on China’s newfound open sexuality and the lack of access to the sex toy market. Wu opened an online sex toy company, TOI’s Intimacy Boutique, and has experienced nonstop profitability since its beginnings. "Demand is huge because most people prefer the privacy of shopping for sex toys online,” Li Chengze, another young entrepreneur, says.
Magic Moments, an online retailer of sex toys, has taken it upon themselves to cater to every demographic—including the blind. Their sex toy team, along with the help of Alexander Daley, a blind man, began their mission last month to create a safe, easy to use and—most importantly—pleasurable line of adult toys for disabled individuals.
Does a 19-year-old college freshman know the difference between a dildo and a vibrator? Are they too afraid to explore a would-be fetish? In answer to these and other sex-related questions, the University of Maryland has partnered with Washington D.C.-area adult store The Garden to present “Sex Week” from October 15th-18th, an on-campus event geared towards educating college students in all things sex-related, including how to properly choose adult novelties that are eco-friendly.
Vibrators.com is giving away up to 200 sex toys daily to government employees looking to keep their hands busy during the ongoing government shutdown. The website’s promotion began last Friday, giving away 400 vibrators over the course of the weekend. On Monday, Vibrators.com picked things up, filling out orders of their daily stock of 200 toys before noon.
The vibrators being given away during this economic crisis have been thoroughly tested in the lab of PriveCo’s Troy, Michigan warehouse, and are user-approved.
"We're real picky," says Tom Nardone, the president of PriveCo—the company that runs Vibrators.com. "There are 20,000 vibrators on the market, and we chose the best 350. That's our brand position. When we went looking for a free vibe to give away we brought in a bunch of different vibrators and tested them all, and you can't get too powerful for the wand and AA battery size, but this one is quite powerful and it's quiet, so we really like it. It's a good vibrator. For free, it's amazing."
Nardone says that originally, they were toying with a few giveaway ideas that poke fun at the expense of those behind the shutdown. “ The idea of free penis pumps for senators was tossed out, as was a half-off deal on enemas.”
A woman being pleasured by an octopus. A kitten pawing a man’s testicles. You can find this and much more inside the walls of the British Museum as part of the "Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art" exhibition. Since its opening in 1753, this is by far the most sexually explicit exhibition the British Museum has ever opened its doors to. The exhibition is based around Japanese shunga, an art that was popular from the 17th to the mid-19th centuries.
