(Note: This article appears in the December 2025 issue of SE Magazine.)
As Regional Manager, Annber Kealoha plays a pivotal role in shaping both the day-to-day operations and long-term success of Janra’s growing network of adult stores. She supports existing and new locations, making her a key link between corporate strategy and in-store execution. In this interview, Kealoha discusses the operational challenges facing stores today and how emerging technologies may redefine adult retail in 2026.
SE: Tell us a bit about your role at Janra and what an average day looks like.
Kealoha: As the Regional Manager at Janra, my primary focus is on supporting both our staff and the stores. My responsibilities vary and encompass providing training, problem-solving, coordinating marketing initiatives and overseeing each store’s inventory. I may be involved in any combination of these tasks, making each day dynamic and engaging. I also recently began contributing to various departments within Janra’s corporate office, which has equipped me to identify where informative training materials would be most beneficial.
SE: As one of eight Regional Managers, do you often connect with the others to share ideas and best practices?
Kealoha: Yes, we stay in touch through a variety of communication methods. That’s where I’ve gotten the most valuable advice on merchandising, guest resolution and staff development. Sharing experiences and perspectives, especially when they differ from my own, helps me address challenges more effectively.
SE: How do you balance consistent customer experience with unique store identities?
Kealoha: Each store builds rapport with its community in its own way. We have the flexibility to design and decorate stores to reflect local tastes and customize inventory to meet diverse preferences.
“I expect a virtual ‘in-store’ shopping experience, similar to a video game, to be developed soon.”
— Annber Kealoha, Regional Manager
SE: What are some of the biggest operational challenges adult stores face today?
Kealoha: Guests are often apprehensive about their privacy and the age verification process. To address these issues, we handle items discreetly, provide baskets, hold items at the register and use opaque bags at checkout. We also assure guests that we do not collect personal information without their consent.
Pricing is another primary concern, as many guests are on a tight budget. To address this, we educate them on the value of investing in quality products rather than opting for the cheapest options that may require frequent replacement.
SE: In your opinion, what products or customer engagement trends will we see more of in 2026?
Kealoha: I believe technology-driven trends will continue to shape the industry. AI-influenced products are beginning to gain momentum, opening up new possibilities for interactive experiences and will likely lead to innovative designs, functions and product forms previously unseen in the industry. I also expect a virtual “in-store” shopping experience, similar to a video game, to be developed soon.
SE: What advice would you offer independent store owners looking to scale or strengthen their operations?
Kealoha: Be actively involved leaders. Avoid spending all your time behind a desk—get to know your team, your operation and your community.
SE: Janra is an expanding company, adding new locations every year. How is a new location acquired?
Kealoha: Opening a new adult shop under the Janra brand involves a series of well-coordinated steps, starting with identifying the most suitable location. We evaluate factors such as surrounding businesses that drive foot traffic, the presence of competitors, rent pricing, landlord acceptance and compliance with local ordinances.
Janra provides each acquired store with a comprehensive “new store package,” which includes adult store basics and top-selling items to ensure a strong start. After setup is complete and employees are ready to open the doors, an ongoing analysis of sales data allows us to make adjustments as necessary.
