The market for sex machines — a ride that doesn’t disappoint — is rapidly growing, especially as sex machines have increased tremendously in technology as of late. And as the market saturates with plenty of quality product, none of which is cheap, it can be difficult for new customers to decide which auto-pleasurer to try. That’s why Women’s Health Magazine has taken the time to consult sexperts and sift through customer reviews to recommend the 14 best new releases in sex toys this year.
“Sex machines can take you to pound town with more intense and faster thrusting than a partner may be able to provide,” shares Javay Frye-Nekrasova, a sex educator for Lovehoney.
What is a sex machine?
“If you’re imagining a mechanical bull (à la Urban Cowboy) but with a sex toy mounted on top, well, you’re not wrong,” explains Women’s Health. “Yes, some sex machines can be massive (and intimidating), but many more are actually much smaller and more accessible for the average user.”
A sex machine can be all those bells whistles, or it can be pretty simple.
“[A sex machine is] a mechanized appliance that provides sexual experiences whether or not a partner is with you—the term is often used for machines that stroke or thrust, less so for items like vibrators,” says Carol Queen, PhD, a sexologist for Good Vibrations. “Sex machines are usually (though not always) larger than other sex toys.”
A sex machine can do just about anything to get you to your orgasm, and there’s something available for every anatomy, as well as every pleasure drive. There are sex machines that penetrate, lick, suck stroker and thrust.
Why get a sex machine?
“Any handyperson will tell you it’s important to use the right tool for the job. And that advice applies to sex toys, too, ” explains Women’s Health. “Sure, vibrators, dildos, and strokers can be a lot of fun, but sometimes you’re looking for more stimulation.”
“If someone enjoys deep, rapid penetration or simultaneous sucking and stroking, no other toy (or human) can give the kind of stimulation that sex machines can offer without taking breaks,” says Sarah Tomchesson, Lovehoney’s resident sexual wellness expert.
Sex machines offer variety versatility to the bedroom, and can supplement everything from a great night at home alone, to BDSM, to the simulation of a threesome for a kinky couple.
Queen offers the following reasons a sex machine could be worth the investment:
- You wish a toy could more completely give you the experience of partnered sex.
- You are a huge sex toy fan who wants All. The. Toys.
- You like to host little sex parties in your home.
- You have a partner (who’s into it) that you want to watch use a sex machine.
- You have a partner you want to show off for.
How do I know which sex machine is right for me?
Because sex toys aren’t necessarily cheap — some even running in the four figures — Queen offers a checklist of important components to consider when shopping for a sex machine:
- Is it easy to clean?
- What’s its RPM range? (A sex machine’s high-power function might be too much for some users, so make sure it also has a lower one so you can find your groove.)
- Will it take the weight of anyone who’d want to use it?
- Do you know who manufactured it so you can contact them if need be?
- Can your home’s electrical system handle the power draw?
- Does it look like fun? Can you picture yourself enjoying it?
As of yet, there’s no official standard for sex machines, so it’s important to shop reputable brands with demonstrable research.
“Shopping with a reputable retailer is one of the best ways to ensure you’re buying safe, legitimate products,” says Frye-Nekrasova.
User reviews are also helpful for determining which sex machine is right for you.
“Actual user feedback will help you determine if you can achieve your desired fantasy,” says Tomchesson. “In that vein, sex machines that offer versatility are the best investment and can be used in a number of ways to achieve different sensations and experiences. Compare the features and user reviews to find your perfect match.”
As with everything, the “best” is subjective.
“Ultimately, the best toy for you will be the one that has the right features to meet your needs,” says Women’s Health.
