Addressing attendees at Las Vegas’ Erotic Heritage Museum last week, artist Dafne Blade offered an intimate look into their transformative experience developing Magic Wand’s iconic Pleasure as Art sculpture. The audience, which included industry vets, academics, artists, and museum goers, was treated to two stories simultaneously – one of Blade’s personal journey and one of the art piece’s evolution from concept to creation.

Blade’s presentation was preceded by a historical retrospective from Dr. Lynn Comella, author of Vibrator Nation and Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at UNLV. Comella shared stories and examples of Magic Wand’s impact on society, noting that Blade’s creation was now part of that history.

Winner of a national competition that called on artists to design art using 100 inactive Magic Wands, Blade explained that news of the contest represented everything they had been looking for.

“I saw the competition notice and there was only one week before the deadline to submit,” Blade shared with event attendees. “I knew this was exactly what I wanted and needed, so I called my job and told them I wasn’t coming in that week.”

Blade presented slides of their contest entry, which they’d submitted with just minutes to spare, along with a host of photos of the entire design and construction process – one that involved their whole family. In order to stay on schedule, Blade called on their parents and siblings to help with construction of the massive sculpture – an experience that pushed them into the uncharted waters of gender and sexual expression.

“Dafne’s presentation was as fascinating as it was moving,” explains Shay Martin, owner of Vibratex and CMO of the Magic Wand brand. “It was such an amazing story, and I’m thrilled to have Dafne and their art as part of our brand’s legacy.”

The Pleasure as Art sculpture will remain on display at The Harry Mohney Erotic Heritage Museum in Las Vegas through the end of October. Magic Wand intends to share details of the sculpture’s continued tour, as well as the release of images and video of Blade’s touching presentation, in the near future.
