The Museum of Sex (MoS), an immersive and educational museum for the adult public which inaugurated in 2002 in New York City, is excited to announce its opening of a second location in Miami, FL this coming January. The existing NYC museum is praised for providing current scholarship in the science, culture and history of all things sexuality, as well as art exhibits, publications and programs committed to encouraging public discourse.

According to the museum’s website, the MoS “offer[s] a variety of fun and cultural exhibits that showcase different perspectives on sexuality.”

When the Museum of Sex first emerged on NYC’s Fifth Avenue in 2002, it was without precedent in the museum world. In its more than twenty years, the leading scholars and historians which make up the advisory board, such as doctors and directors of university programs in research in sex, sexuality, gender and reproduction, have contributed to the curation of a dynamic institution in both education and art. With a permanent collection of over 20,000 artifacts, art, photography, textiles and ephemera, the museum has curated more than 50 exhibitions that delve into the diverse realms of human sexuality within the realms of arts, sciences and culture. In addition to the museum, a research library, as well as an extensive multimedia library, preserve a history which might otherwise be destroyed due to the nature of its sexual content.

According to their Mission Statement: “Our commitment is to foster an environment that promotes open dialogue, free from the constraints of self-censorship. Beyond exhibitions, we have curated lecture series, events and digital content, as well as publications, all dedicated to engaging with a broad spectrum of topics related to sexuality.”

Now, the “world of human sexuality” is expanding South, with a pivotal position in the cultural hub of art and sexuality, Miami, FL.

“Choosing Miami, already a destination that celebrates commodified versions of eroticism, makes for a perfect environment for MoS’s newest location to call home,” says SE’s PR and Marketing Director, Kristofer Kay, who himself matured in the Miami area.

“Nestled in Allapattah, this 32,000 square foot space, designed in collaboration with Snohetta, draws inspiration from the success of its New York City flagship over the past 21 years,” reports World Red Eye, whose members were in attendance of the private opening party.

The exclusive preview for VIP guests took place in a fabulous event last Friday night, on December 1, in anticipation of the public opening in January 2024.

Notable guests of the opening party included: Amanda Lepore, model, singer and performance artist, also known as “the muse” of David LaChapelle; Susanne Bartsch, Swiss event producer and creative director of Bartschland; Danny Santiago, Miami fashion designer; Phoebe Grott, Director of Marketing and Strategic Partnership of Nalpac; Ken Hersovitz, CEO of Vibratex; Nora Langknecht, Global Marketing Manager of Fun Factory; Zoë Ligon, sex educator and Founder of Spectrum Boutique; Jeanelle Mastema, experimental body and performance artist; and Tam Gryn, art curator and author.

Attendees were treated to sneak peeks of the inaugural exhibition programming, which features the likes of artist Hajime Sorayama‘s “Desire Machines,” the historical survey “Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency” and the immersive experience “Super Funland: Journey into the Erotic Carnival.”

According to World Red Eye, in celebration and merriment were specialty cocktails with NSFW names, mermaid performances in a 40-foot mermaid tank by Super Funland called “Merlandia,” and the Miami-based DJ, Charlie Soul Clap. Guests convened and bopped to the beats beneath the gaze of a colossal sculpture of the “50-foot woman” (featured image).

“StorErotica was honored to attend and experience firsthand what Kit Richardson (certified sexpert and Head of Retail at the Museum of Sex in New York City, as well as the host of the 2023 SE Awards) and her staff have created,” says Kay. “Part-Wonka factory, part-living history lesson, MoS Miami should be able to make a name for itself in a city steeped in the traditions and embracement of human sexuality, in all of its forms.”

As the world’s premier institution dedicated to exploring human sexuality, the Museum of Sex has much to bring to and from the city of Miami, including more highly-anticipated collaborations with a fresh crop of renowned artists and academics in one of the most sex-positive communities in the country.

“Beyond enlightenment, it’s a space designed for outright outrageous fun,” says World of Eye.
