Just released this lovers’ holiday, a universal sex toy suggests a new way of thinking about accessibility in the adult retail category.

The TENGA UNI is a reversible sex toy designed for people of all genders and sexualities. The toy can be used by anyone with a penis or clitoris, as well as in any pairing partnership. According to Pink News, “The stretchy material is designed to be placed on the fingers to stimulate the clitoris. It can also be turned inside-out to be placed on the shaft of the penis.”

A press release for the product, which has been on the market since February 14, describes the toy as “large, [with] complex ridges [which] provide an intense and enveloping sensation that is similar to oral sex, whilst it can also be used to enhance manual stimulation when using it on your fingers.”

The TENGA UNI comes in four different variations, all named for the gemstones whose common cut shapes these toys evoke: the Emerald, Diamond, Topaz and Amethyst.

The Emerald is described as having “large lateral step details [to] create a stimulating sensation as you pass over them”, while the Diamond has “diamond-shaped ridges.”

The Topaz also shares “round details on the entire surface [for] a rolling and bouncing stimulation,” while the Amethyst features large and small square details.

According to Pink News, the universal sex toy marks a new category for universal pleasure. While it’s not the first gender neutral toy on the market, the TENGA UNI does offer a mindset shift in considering pleasure for all body types.

The reversible design “comes during a movement in the industry to move away from gendered wording, phallic-shaped toys and heteronormative uses,” says Pink News. “Data from the 2021 census in the UK confirmed that Gen Z had the highest proportion of self-identifying lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The census had issues with accurately obtaining figures on gender identity, but gender-diverse people are very much entitled to pleasure.”

The turn in the sex toy industry which is liberating for all in the LGBTQ+ community may also benefit the sex lives of all people, as it deviates from and reconsiders what sex support can look like.

As Monica Chang, TENGA’s sex expert, tells PinkNews: “When it comes to couple’s toys, we can see that the focus of the design is largely made with heterosexual relationships in mind. As a result, the arousal for the partnered play is not as intense as it should be when used in a same-sex relationship.

“The TENGA UNI is however revolutionary for the LGBTQ+ community as it is one of the first pleasure products that can be used by any gendered pairing for both penile and clitoral stimulation.”

As with all sex toy use, remember to use lube!
