It should be no surprise that a company named, in part, after the state where it’s headquartered, has continuously built up a collection — California Dreaming — that reflects all the best the locale has to offer in the most pleasurable ways possible!
CalExotics is seemingly synonymous with California — heck, the state’s name is basically ingrained in the company name.
The California Dreaming collection, which now numbers 26 unique styles in total, is further evidence of CalExotics’ embrace of The Golden State.
“The California Dreaming collection invites users to play, explore and have fun with pleasure,” says CalExotics founder Susan Colvin. “The original idea of the line was inspired by the CalExotics brand and the location of our headquarters, sunny California. The brand, which was originally known as California Exotic Novelties, has always stayed true to the California spirit, which puts fun at the center of everything! We wanted a collection that would embody this in its packaging and product designs, and that is where California Dreaming came from.”
The creative team at CalExotics has met the challenge of embodying its products with California DNA by cleverly naming, many alliteratively, each of the products after some Cali location or landmark — like Bel Air Bombshell or Palisades Passion.
“The names of each product play into this perfectly,” says Colvin. “The first step is choosing a popular California location. We look for well-known destinations that have a real excitement attached to them. Next, we work on the catchy sub-name. For this season, we found locations all over California. We started down south in San Diego and made our way north to Sonoma, stopping at a few locations in between like Oceanside, Long Beach, Pacific Palisades and Bel Air.”
With this newest batch, totaling six new styles, CalExotics looked to “stay true to the collection” while ramping things up from a product perspective.
“We made each toy with its own unique functionality, and to take it to the next level, we added a third motor,” says Colvin. “The third motor adds even more power and excitement to these incredible toys.” In addition to the triple motor design, the six new styles all offer 10 functions and three speeds and come with a memory-chip feature.

Here’s a quick look at the six new California Dreaming products:

“For example, with the Oceanside Orgasm, users can set the shaft’s vibration level and the suction speed in the stimulator,” remarks Colvin. “They can use the shaft and stimulator together or just use one at a time. It’s no wonder then that California Dreaming has surged to become one of the company’s best-selling lines. Colvin points to two reasons actually for that reality: “extraordinary features and stunning designs.”

“With this line, we wanted to push the boundaries of pleasure and provide something unique and different,” adds Colvin. “Each California Dreaming product offers a distinct pleasure sensation not typically found in traditional pleasure products.”
As for the design, California Dreaming has become known for its appealing, vibrant colors (think, or Google, the murals lining Venice Beach).

Since the company’s inception, CalExotics — as many prosperous companies do — has heeded customer feedback to drive product improvement.
“This feedback has helped us create some fantastic products, including a new product in the California Dreaming collection,” says Colvin. “This season we worked to incorporate the feedback from CalExotics’ resident sexologist Dr. Jill McDevitt. Dr. Jill had an idea to combine two powerful features from some popular California Dreaming products; specifically, the thumping pulsations from the Santa Monica Starlet and the tapping sensations from the Monterey Magic. Plus, Dr. Jill suggested we focus on her hometown of San Diego and her favorite color, yellow. After further research and development, the San Diego Seduction was created!”
That quick peek into how a new product was born reveals some of the ingredients the folks at CalExotics look at in concocting California Dreaming staples.
With joyful names and an inviting color palette, the California Dreaming collection sets itself up for success, but that doesn’t mean retailers can’t encourage even more sales.
CalExotics suggests retailers create a dedicated California Dreaming section for that very reason.
“The bright colors, fun packaging and California theme will grab shoppers’ attention,” says Colvin.
The company also offers testing displays to allow consumers to see and feel these products themselves. For online retailers, where testing is impossible or incomplete, CalExotics provides a variety of assets — imagery and video — to pique customers’ curiosity.
Deriving from the third-largest state in the country (trailing Alaska and Texas) and the most populous, it seems California Dreaming is still ascending versus hitting its peak.
“We’re always looking to enhance the intimate experience with new products,” says Colvin. “With California Dreaming, that means new California locations to feature and thrilling pleasure options to explore.”
